How the Hearts AI was broken on iOS
A few months ago I received an email from someone telling me that there was a bug in the Hearts AI. As I was unable to reproduce the bug, I did not pay much attention anymore, but recently I discovered that there was indeed a bug, but only on iOS! This blog post explains what happened.
Since the advent of ChatGPT in November 2022, AI seems to be all over the place. I sometimes get asked how the AI for the card games on Whisthub works, so I thought that it was a good time to write a blog post on it. Beware, this post is long and can get a bit technical!
On Whisthub, at the start of each game, the cards are dealt by the computer. You might think that this happens completely at random, or worse, that for some reason you intentionally get bad cards. Both are false, and this blog post gives a detailed explanation on how the cards are shuffled and dealt by the computer.
To make the leaderboard more fair, Manille games played with predefined teams will no longer count for the leaderboard. Games that do count for the leaderboard will now have the teams be chosen at random when the room starts. In this blog post we explain why this was needed.
As promised in the blog post about Apple killing the Whisthub app, I would come back to it when there was new information. This has happended sooner than I expected, but luckily it's good news! Apple has reverted their decision to kill the Whisthub app.
If you want to use Whisthub in fullscreen mode on iPhone or iPad, it was always possible to add it to your homescreen. Unfortunately Apple has announced some changes that will make this impossible. Push notifications will be gone too, in what can only be described as an outright attack on the open web.
Waiting for players to join your room can be annoying on a mobile device because you can't close Whisthub without being thrown out of the room. Today we're introducing a solution for this, which should make waiting for players more bearable.
Keep your friends close: introducing the friend system
A lot of online communities offer some kind of friend system. It's something that I have wanted to add to Whisthub for a long time too, but there was always to problem of how to send invitations. Today it is finally solved!
Recently I got an email from someone, telling me that the Kingen AI was cheating. At first I didn't believe it, but it turns out there was indeed a bug in the AI. This blog post explains what happened.
Recently we've been made aware that the points table used in Wiezen did not correspond to the points table used by the IWWA. We've fixed this to realign them again.
Tournaments are a core functionality of Whisthub. However, sometimes it can be challenging to not forget when they start. Today we're adding a solution for this with push notifications.
We are introducing a new type of tournaments for Manille where rounds will be played with a single partner instead of switching partners during a round. This blog post explains the reasons for this.
Whisthub was launched in December 2019, but its history goes back way more years. This blog post gives an in-depth overview of the history of Whisthub.
Starting a blog on Whisthub is something I've wanted to do for a long time. After nearly four years, I've finally decided to take it on. Read all about it!
